Taiteilija Marja Kankaan projekti, jossa tutkitaan Turkua rakkauden mahdollisena tapahtumapaikkana. Projekti toteutettiin keväällä 2006 ja taiteilija kirjoitti siitä pro gradu -työn Tampereen yliopistoon 2007.
Mikä Rakkauden kaupunki?
Rakkauden kaupunki on taideprojekti, jossa tutkittiin Turkua rakkauden mahdollisena paikkana. Taiteilija haastatteli keväällä 2006 sata turkulaista. Hän kysyi: 1. Mistä löytää/Missä olet kokenut rakkautta Turussa? 2. Miten rakkautta voi löytää? 3. Mitä rakkaus on?
Keräämänsä materiaalin pohjalta taiteilija suunnitteli esityksellisen turistikierroksen, jota esitettiin Olohuone- kaupunkitaidefestivaaleilla. Lisäksi Rakkauden kaupungista painettiin kartta.
Projektin herättämiä kysymyksiä taiteilija pohti pro gradu-työssään Tampereen yliopistoon.

The City of Love is an art project.
I started experimenting with the idea of the City of Love in 2005. First it was Hyvinkää, a small town in southern Finland where I participated in a workshop. The starting point was ’performance as a catalyst’.
Last year I did a more detailed version of it in my hometown, Turku. During the project I interviewed 100 people. I started as a tourist, wandered around with the map and asked strangers to help me. I asked three questions: Where can I find love in Turku? How can one find love? What love is?
After having discussed with many people and gathered stories, experiences and memories, I started working on with the material. Together with the graphic designer I designed a new map of Turku, only we called it The City of Love. The map introduced places which might be interesting if you happen to be in love or want to find it… The map included also sites of breaking up, saying goodbye etc. My idea was to dispense the wisdom which existed in the community.
I also planned a performance. I performed three times during Olohuone (Living room) festival which is an annual urban art festival in Turku. The performances were like guided tourist tours, made by walking. Or at least, they started as tourist guides but on the way it became a journey into the core of the city, in the essence of Love...
I also wrote my master’s thesis about the City of Love project. More presicely I wrote about the relationship between the artist and the community, the interaction.
I have plans to continue with the concept in near future...
